Root Canal Treatment
Root canal treatment is performed to save a tooth when the nerve of the tooth is affected by infection or decay. The infected nerves, pulp, decay and any bacteria are removed from the tooth and the space is filled with medicated dental materials to save the tooth. If a root canal is not performed in time to save the tooth, extraction may be needed. The therapy saves you from pain, infection and the cost and trouble of bearing a tooth extraction and the restorative procedures that follow thereafter.
Signs and symptoms that indicated the need for root canal therapy:
- Sensitivity to hot and cold foods
- An abscess or pimple on the gums
- Swelling and tenderness in the gums and teeth
- Severe toothache
A root canal procedure requires one or two appointments at our clinic. The treatment begins by numbing the tooth and placing a rubber dam around it to isolate it from the other teeth and keep it dry. An opening is made at the top of the tooth to clean the infection and decay. The tooth is then sealed with dental filling and a temporary crown may be used to cover it. A temporary crown will be replaced with a permanent one on your next visit.
After treatment, your tooth may feel sensitivity, which should subside as the inflammation diminishes and the area heals. You will be given post-op care instructions after the appointment.
