Inlays & Onlays
Inlay and onlay restorationsare custom fillingsmade withtooth-colored porcelain, gold or composite material. They are manufactured in a professional dental laboratory and permanently cemented onto the tooth at our clinic in Crossroads, TX. Inlays and onlays are essentially identical to one another, except that inlays fit between the cusps of a tooth while onlays are used to cover one or more of the cusps themselves.
Inlays and onlays are conservative treatments for repairing teeth damaged by trauma or decay or teeth that have largely defective fillings. These restorations may be needed for the following reasons:
- Fractured or broken teeth
- Decayed teeth
- Cosmetic enhancement
- Large fillings
- Fractured fillings
The placement of inlays or onlays would require two appointments to our clinic in Crossroads, TX. At your first appointment, impressions of your teeth will be taken to create permanent as well as temporary restorations for you. The tooth is numbed, and any decay and old fillings are cleaned out before carefully shaping the tooth. A temporary restoration is then placed while the permanent one is prepared in a dental lab based on the molds taken. At your second appointment, your new onlay/inlay is precisely cemented onto your tooth and adjustments are made to ensure a comfortable bite and proper fit.
Inlays and onlays are an excellent way to give you a beautiful smile for several years. Just like other restorative dentistry treatments, they are subject to normal wear and may need replacement after some time.
